Contest finds best skinner in N.Z.
PA Rotorua John Hodges, of Wanganui. won the best open skinner title at the first New Zealand opossum-skinning championship at the Agradorne, Ngongataha, near Rotorua on Saturday. He the Dalgety cup and $lOO. Second place went to D. Wilson, of Rotorua, who won $25.
The championship, run by the Rotorua Deerstalkers’ Association, was divided into six sections although no one section was considered the main event.
About 40 opossum hunters, all except four from the North Island, demonstrated their skills before two panels of three judges. More than 300 people gathered for the start of the competition just about 9 a.m. but the crowd had dwindled to about 100 when it finished at 2 p.m. The man who won ths South Island opossum-skin-ning championship at Moana. Westland, Alex Wingham, finished third in the section for the fastest skinner and second in the fastest sleeveskinner section.
