Naval rating on murder charge
PA- Auckland A naval rating was remanded in custody to September 29 on a charge of tha murder of Jacqueline Hazel Blunden when he appeared in the North Shore District Court yesterday. No plea was taken. .Judge Murray suppressed the rating’s name because none of his family had been informed. The youth was apprehended at Nelson on Tuesday by a police homicide squad and later charged with the’ murder of Miss Blunden, aged 16, at Auckland last month.
The. rating, from H.M.N.Z.S. Taranaki which
berthed at Nelson on Tuesday, was taken to Auckland and arrested.
Miss Blunden was found in Anzac Street, Takapuna, in the early hours of August 23 with severe head injuries. She died on August 29. Commander M. M. R. Pate, of the Taranaki, said yesterday the rating, bad questioned by the police at Auckland and again at Lyttelton before, being escorted from the ship at Nelson. He was not arrested while aboard his ship and the Navy had taken no action against him. “The Navy played no part in this — it was entirely .a police investigation,” said Commander Pate.
