Rain continues On West Coast

Greymouth reporter

i 'A morning of sunshine in' Greymouth yesterday ■ gave way to drizzling rain, ensuring that rain ! has fallen on the West Coast every day so far this month.

The rain has caused the worst start to the whitebait season in years. The season runs from September 1 to November 30, but i all rivers in the area have been running at generally ; abnormal levels and are dirty. •The rainfall for the first 23 days of September

totalled 300 mm in Greymouth but in South Westland it is expected to be double that figure. The rain has not only affected the whitebait season. The Greymouth fishing fleet, one of the biggest in New Zealand, has been held in port because of the weather, bar conditions, and rough seas. One fisherman said that if the weather did not improve soon several would be forced out of business.

The weather has also severely affected lambing and calving on waterlogged farms.
