Conner to be replaced?

NZPA Newport, Rhode Island The “Australia” syndicate head, Alan Bond, said yesterday he had heard that Dennis Conner might be replaced as skipper of “Freedom” in the America’s Cup sailing match. Mr Bond said it could be that Malin Bumham, the skipper of “Enterprise,” the boat the Freedom has used all along as a sparring part-

ner, might take over. “There’s a possibility they’ll change the helmsman if Conner loses .tomorrow,’’ said Mr Bond.

“The Americans have got two boats and two complete teams that are interchangeable. When someone loses a race, there is always dissatisfaction.” Asked for the source of his information, Mr Bond replied: “That did come from within their own camp.”
