Bayreuth Festival
Sir, — Professor Ritchie, in his interesting impressions of the Bayreuth Wagnerian Festival (“The Press,” August 26), refers to essential accessories. He states that having a dinner jacket will save embarrassment. This sounds as though there may be official discouragement if you attend wearing less than a black tie, and implies, at least, a certain snobbishness on the part of the management. This is quite incorrect. Most men do wear dinner jackets and most women wear party frocks but these are definitely not de rigeur. I wore only a dark suit and certainly experienced no embarassment. Many younger people dressed informally, and jeans were neither unusual nor remarked on. The management make available seats ranging from $3 to $6O, and point out. that a limited budget is no bar to either accommodation (I paid only $9 a night for quite satisfactory bed and breakfast) or seats for the festival. Dinner jackets are neither necessary nor remarked on in their absence. — Yours, etc., G. R. GILBERT. August 27, 1980.
