Rail freight charges
Sir, — I will soon transfer to Hokitika and face the problem of transporting a Fiat Bambina car there from Christchurch. The most practical solution seemed to be to use the railways. I was shocked however to be quoted $167.11 to rail a Fiat Bambina from Christchurch to Hokitika. Last Friday as I was driving to the West Coast I passed a train heading westwards and pulling a large number of empty waggons including about 20 empty flatdeck waggons. I have no intention of paying $167.11 to transport a small car from Christchurch to Hokitika; obviously other potential rail customers feel the same about rail freight charges; hence the empty waggons. Small wonder New Zealand Railways makes a loss. — Yours, etc., M. F. ROCHE, August 27, 1980.
