The economy
Sir, —L. J. Stevens (August 20) writes an intended learned letter which turns out to be nothing but yet another yawn-provoking • attack on the unions ■ and the workforce. If union greed or blackmail was the sole cause of our present chaotic economic situation your correspondent could possibly have had a case. As it is, I see the same bid tired horse being ridden backwards by a short-sighted. and inexperienced ’ rider. Perhaps I may respectfully refer your correspondent- to my own letter printed on August 14 where the .points, , raised therein have obvious answers totally unconnected with union greed. The proposed aluminium smelter may well turn out to be a clone of the Bahrain white elephant but I am confident some learned Muldoonist will eventually come up with a deformed rationalisation ’ whereby both could be blamed on the unions or the F.O.L. — Yours, etc., ARTHUR MAY. August 20, 1980. ■
