Air pollution
Sir, —Mr P. V. Neary should have realised by now that despite the many requests, proposals and suggestions offered by the Clean Air Society for the reduction of air pollution in Christchurch, such as a cheapen electricity rate in winter, and government subsidies on solid-fuel space-heaters, the government has expressed no concern nor offered any assistance to the smog problem. The Government’s attitude towards air-pollution in Christchurch was reinforced by Mr Gair’s statement at a recent medical conference in Christchurch when he stated that the Government was not concerned with this problem which has to be solved by Christchurch. City councillors recently commented that Mr Gair seemed more concerned with fluoridation than , with air-pollution. While fluoridation is a dubious means of ensuring healthy teeth, any sufferer from respiratory diseases knows that air-pollution is a more serious problem than fluoridation. — Yours, etc., JOHN J. FORSTER. . August 21, 1980.
