Sir, — Sb. a public appeal for about $150,000 to open a “small heart surgery unit in Christchurch is to start within two weeks. The Health Department and the Government already have emphasised- the obvious

objections that as long as an established unit, with two highly qualified and skilled surgeons, in Dunedin has so few patients that there are weeks without any surgery being required it would be irresponsible to build such a unit in Christchurch. Also, what would be the annual running costs of such a unit estimated at $7OOO for each patient? The “companions would be better occupied in dissuading certain cardiologists in Christchurch from refusing to send patients to Dunedin: even when the patient has made such a request.
