Police action unlikely
PA Wellington The Commissioner. of Police (Mr R. J.. Walton) is satisfied the Police Association will not take action over the plan to give 30 police jobs to civilians this year. , “I don’t think the Police Association intended taking any action. I think comments the association made arose because they did not know the facts,” he said at the week-end. Mr Walton met the Police Association’s secretary (Dr R. A. Moodie) in Wellington on Friday after last Wednesday’s association council meeting, which authorised Dr Moodie to take every action necessary to protect members’ employment. ■■
The association was considering some form of industrial action over the increasing number of civilians taking jobs in the Police Department.
The association alleged that 30 jobs would definitely jgo to civilians this year, and that another 154 were under Consideration. Mr Walton said he told Dr Moodie he had as much regard for the welfare of his staff as the association did. He confirmed that 30 civilian staff were to be taken on, but denied the association’s suggestion that • more were being considered.
