Girl ‘brighter’ after having feet amputated
PA Rotorua Noti Apirana, aged 19, who has had both her feet amputated after being lost ini' the Urewefa ranges, for a week, was “much happier now, in spite of everything,” said her mother yesterday.
Frostbite caused circulation problems for Miss Apirana and doctors first amputated ..some , toes.: Last week it .was; decided her feet. •’
“They had been worrying her,” said Mrs Elizabeth Api&na. “But now she Tis much brighter and happieri Before'; the operation!, stye was''looking at her feet all the time. It was not aMpretty sight.”' 'Mrs "Apirana said Noti and her sister, Salina, aged. 20, who is expected ■ to -leave hospital soon, had received cards and letters, from
throughout New Zealand, many of them from 'Auckland and the South Island.
“Many of the people prayed that my daughters would be found alive in the bush,” Mrs Apirana said. “We all have so many people to thank: so many were involved.”
Noti Apirana is not expected to be discharged from hospital before October or November and faces a ■ long period of adjustment and training in the use of artificial feet. “She is • very happy and not worried about having new feet fitted,” said Mrs Apirana. “We will be there to look after her.”
