Fishermen reach safety on raft
PA Invercargill Policemen from Te Anau have oeen unable to go to George Sound in Fiordland to pick up three Bluff fishermen who abandoned . the fishing boat Hercules on Monday evening. The men spent almost five hours on a life-raft before they reached the permanently based venison-re-covery vessel Ranganui, at the head of the sound. The police said the men were fit, and were yesterday morning looking for their vessel, which is thought to be either beached or sunk halfway down the sound. The police plan to go into the area to bring the men out when the weather clears. The men are the. skipper, Mr Greg Low; his son, Mr David Low; and Mr Michael Ryan. At the moment, there is no indication why . the men abandoned the boat. .
They radioed Awarua oh Monday evening saying the engine room was full of water and that they planned to abandon the vessel. Awarua radio received the call about 5.30 p.m., but the weather was too bad for a helicopter to fly in. _ The police spokesman said a howling gale was blowing, although it was not known how rough the sea was. Before they left the Hercules the. fnen had seemed confident of reaching the Ranganui. ’ .'
