Litter council
Sir, —■ The New Zealand Lifter Control Council had its annual meeting in Wellington recently. Mr Highet referred to the new infringement notice system and the added powers of lit-? ter control officers and a plea for strong support from the industrial sector. My plea would be to the Litter Council to “waste not nor want not” and to place more emphasis in pressing the Government for legislation for standardisation of 129 bottle types and the best use of containers for products that reflect New Zealand’s 1980 resources in economic and resource recycling terms, and incentives not to litter. The council publicises litter when all of it is - recyclable. Pitch-in and cleanup campaigns do not link in with litter as resource material. Let us develop our non-waste. technology. Membership of the New Zealand Litter Council includes manufacturers of the containers. Wider representation should include consumer, resource, and management groups. — Yours, etc., G. D. STANLEY.
