Proposed tour by Springboks
- Sir,—Regarding the . proposed Springbok tour. Mr Rowling states that . the situation is the same now as in 1973. It is not. In 1973 the tour was not stopped because of- public opinion, as he suggests, but because Trevor Richards, of H.A.R.T., threatened to bring 1000 standover men from Australia to disrupt every match. A timid Labour Government stopped the tour. Most protest groups have lost some support because of failure to criticise anyone except South Africa, but in. spite of more support for the tour nobody seems to think it will eventuate because of political interference one way or another. Mr Rowling, in his desire to command more votes, should ponder and think how many were lost in 1975 by the 1973 decision.— Yours, etc., J. C. KING. August 9, 1980.
