Development plans

Sir, —As an environmentalist, I share the concern of many thinking New. Zealanders over the development strategy favoured by the present Government. I therefore challenge Mr W. G. Beavan, of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (“The Press,” August 9).to’a public debate on the issue. Tn such a debate, I would seek to establish the following points. First, many producers are lamentably unaware of the damage they are doing to the environment, and of humankind’s dependence on it Second,, that a highgrowth “hard path” can only be achieved at the price of encouraging local, and foreign monopoly control of our economy and limited resource base, and by jeopardising our independence and integrity as a nation. Third, that although a high growth rate favours the owners of the factors of production, there are negligible benefits for the population as a whole. Fourth, that high growth rates are simply not sustainable.—Yours, etc.,' -. T, N. D. ANDERSON. August 10, 1980. -
