Free enterprise
Sir, — There has been a lot of discussion in these ■columns lately between certain socialist sympathisers and advocates of free enterprise. One of the few points they seem to agree on is a desire for the improvement of individuals and mankind in general. The free enterprisers seem to advocate less Government power,' more incentive to produce and rational self-interest as ways of improving life. The socialists tend to promote centralised government, levelling taxation and surrendering one’s individual will to the majority. I decided ’ to find out ; the best alternative for myself, so I looked around for a real example. I discovered that almost all of the’ people machine-gunned at the Berlin Wall had been escaping from the Communist East to the free West. Hardly anybody was shot trying to get back. This amazing, revelation made my decision. — Yours, etc., TREVOR LONDON. August 9, 1980.
