Nuclear protest

About 60 anti-nuclear protesters marched on the Christchurch offices of the French airline, U.T.A. yesterday. The Bastille Day march was organised by the Catholic Peace Committee and included representatives from Greenpeace, Peace Collective, and other organisations campaigning for a nuclearfree Pacific. The marchers made a circuit of Cathedral Square before presenting a letter to the manager of the Christchurch branch of U.T.A.

A spokesman for Catholic Peace (Mr M. Dodge) said his members were “politely received” by the airline. They had been assured that the letter would be forwarded to Paris and assumed that this meant their message would reach the French Government.

Three members of the committee then proceeded to the offices of Fletcher, Humphreys, Ltd, and a letter was handed to the managing director of that company, Mr R. G. F. Kingscote, the consular agent for France. The group was assured that the letter would be sent on to France’s consular representatives in Wellington, Mr Dodge said. In the meantime, the Christchurch peace groups would continue to protest about the nuclear testing on Mururoa.

“We will carry on until the French stop their activities and there is a nuclearfree Pacific,” Mr Dodge said.
