Cost cuts for hospital
More than $300,000 must be pruned from the cost of the proposed geriatric day unit for The Princess’ Margaret Hospital before~.it is likely to get Health Department approval. . ' ‘ When the North Canterbury Hospital Board first sought approval to begin planning the unit in February last year, the estimated cost was about $1.3 million. A hydrotherapy pool was included in the plan, but the board’s works committee decided yesterday that this expensive item should be deleted.
“If we agreed to the pool we would not have the day unit up for years,” said Mr T. C. Grigg, chairman of the board. .
Provisions could be made for the pool’s inclusion later, he said.
Mr Grigg said that many people believed an old house would be suitable for a daycare unit. Once the board has ap-; proved’ the new cost estimate planning will proceed. It is believed that building will start in mid-1981.
