Disturbance in Square
Sir, — H. Keene reports on police violence in Cathedral Square and suggests that we appoint ourselves as “public watch-dogs” and report on police behaviour. Good stuff. Why should they use force? They were only outnumbered 15 to one, spat at, abused, threatened, and assaulted. Just. day-to-day routine. I do not know what some people expect the police to be like. What would have been the result if the police pulled back and left the “watch-dogs” to deal with the situation? Mr Twentyman says “The Press” staff have requested and received police assistance for some years to allow staff to enter- and leave their building with safety. This indicates that disorder is common in that area. It would appear that a “Press” sub-editor has the names of witnesses and refuses to pass them to the police. This person is having his cake and eating it. — Yours, etc., I. A. M. KEEN. July 8, 1980. [Names of all witnesses interviewed have been supplied to the police.— Editor]
