S.A. and cricket

Sir, — From the- reply of Mr Bob Vance, New Zealand Cricket Board chairman, cricket here appears to support the South African apartheid establishment. Mr Vance blithely asserts that the South African Cricket Union, an amalgam of three former associations, is moving towards integration. He omits to mention that most members of one of those associations. the South African Cricket Board of Control (non-racial, not Coloured as Mr Vance claims), found that they had been hoodwinked into a sham “integration” and they reformed as the South African Cricket Board. This is nonracial in philosophy, policy, and (as far as possible in a racist society) membership. It does not demean itself by accenting token integration under a Government permit system, as S.A.C.U. does. S.A.C.U., like its white predecessor, shields behind Government racial policies; 5.A.C.8., seeking non-racist sport, confronts ’ them. Which is more worthy of international support? — Yours, etc., A. .T. CAMPBELL. July 9, 1980.
