Myxomalosis
Sir, — I strongly object to the proposed introduction of myxomatosis disease to control rabbits as planned by the South Island pest destruction boards. It is an extremely cruel and ugly disease which causes unnecessary suffering before death. Once unleashed upon these animals, who knows the consequences? One Australian expert has stated that the disease can affect other domestic animals. It is tragic in this age that authorities can even consider using such a disease as a control. Have they considered the next generation of New Zealanders who will have to live with their “cost-saving” notion for which there is no justification. My initial reaction was of disbelief, but on reflection it typifies man’s continuing inhumanity to his fellow man and his environment. — Yours, etc., B. A. McNABB. Julv 10, 1980.
