Old marches
Sir, — Where have all the old marches gone? To the same place as all the old Aprils, Mays, Junes and Julys I hope. My brother, erstwhile bandsman and combatant soldier readily agreed that playing them was much more fun than either listening or marching to and made no attempt to perpetuate the myth that they instrumentally caused a stirring in the hearts of minds of most men. We also agreed that of the regular military musical items, only the slurping of army porridge in the mess brought lumps to the throats of us all. — Yours, etc., STEVE BRYANT. June 5, 1980.
