Indian arms purchase
Sir. — Referring to P. .1. Watt’s letter (June 3) questioning the use of Corso money in India, I know that the money given through Corso to the Rural Health and Development programme at Vellore in South India (L. E. Jackson, June 4) reaches the people for whom it is intended: 100,000 villagers. Although one must deplore the purchase of arms by any country, the money spent by India recently is “peanuts” compared with the total world expenditure on arms — 17 billion dollars in onlytwo weeks. It is staggering to realise that that amount of money would be enough to provide for the needs of the whole world for one year. — Yours, etc., GWENDA M. LEWIS.
Formerly anaesthetist at the Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore. South India. June 4, 1980.
