Gas cylinders on recall
PA Wellington A general recall of a particular brand of compressed natural gas cylinder has been ordered as a result of the discovery of cracks in the base of a cylinder. The recall has been ordered by the Chief Inspector of Dangerous Goods (Mr H. Richards). He said testing by the D.S.I.R. had found . cracks which seriously questioned the structural integrity of the tanks. The tanks could be unsafe, he said, although the New Zealand agents were disputing this. The tanks involved are
cylinders made by Industrial Metalmeccanica Zane (1.M.Z.) of Italy, and are marketed in New Zealand by D. McL. Wallace, of Auckland. The company’s compressed natural gas manager (Mr J. McLuliffe) said about 300 cylinders were in cars, while the balance of the 200 cylinders the company imported were still in warehouses. People with I.M.Z. cylinders have been asked to get in touch with the nearest branch of the Wallace company for further advice. Compressed natural gas is not available in the South Island.
