Food embargo

NZPA-Reuter Washington President Carter will impose an embargo today (N.Z. time) on food shipments to Iran and will ask the United States allies to follow suit because of the five-month-long detention of 50 Americans in Teheran. .But the move will not affect New Zealand exports to Iran. The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said yesterday, “We have said we would not adopt self-damaging

policies, I think they (the Americans) would understand if we do not change our mind.” United States officials said Mr Carter was also considering an embargo on medicine as part of an over-all strategy for increasing pressure on Iran to release the captives. The impact of cutting off food ~ would be slight because little was being exported to Iran and United States dock workers were refusing to load most of it anyway.
