'Playboy' to be taxed?

PA Wellington The Government wants to tax such magazines as “Penthouse” and “Playboy.” The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said this yesterday when he was questioned about protests from the record industry over the 40 per cent sales tax on records.

The Recording Industry Association says the tax is unfair because girlie magazines cannot be taxed under an international agreement. Such magazines should be taxed, Mr Muldoon said. Mr ■ Muldoon said the Minister of Customs (Mr Templeton) thought the international agreement was “a bit silly,” and the Government would look

very closely at it to see if there was a way the tax could be applied. Mr Muldoon indicated the Government would not lift the tax on records, and said he could not believe that the normal run of records should not be taxed. “Some people may see them as cultural. I am bound to say I don’t,” he said.

No vote was taken in the caucus on whether the sales tax on records should stay, but he got the impression that Government members supported the tax, Mr Muldoon said.

“They all supported a substantial tax on ‘Penthouse’ and ‘Playboy’,” he said.
