Chathams food
Sir, — I was interested to read (“The Press,” April 16) of the type of food Squeezed off Chatham Island sailings — namely butter, bread and vegetables. I was born on Pitt Island and lived there rter having my schooling in Canterbury. I was greatly impressed by the ingenuity of the inhabitants of the Chatham Islands' making do with the ' best at their disposal in the case of shortages which were frequent. Bread baking, butter making and also vegetable growing were part of the life down there. During the last war years when petre’ was scarce and dear we used Dodge car generators and home-made two-bladed propellers to charge our household radio batteries. — Yours, etc., ' E. A. LANGDALE-HUNT. April 16, 1980.
