Threat to S.U.P. ‘capricious’

A legal adviser for the Canterbury Council for Civil Liberties has told the council that in his opinion the comments by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) about the possible outlawing of the Socialist Unity Party were "sailing close to the wind in terms of criminal libel.” The council’s chairman (Dr K. P. Clements) said that the legal adviser had said that Mr Muldoon had acted capriciously in suggesting the S.U.P. might be outlawed. Mr Muldoon had accused the S.U.P. and individual members of acting subversively, said Dr Clement, yet he had produced no evidence, or laid charges which could be tested in a court of law. “Our council feels very ; strongly that Mr Muldoon is < endeavouring to soften up the public by stepping up his 1 threats against the S.U.P. The i consequences of these actions > are very grave for all opposition political parties and the trade-union movement, and something we cannot condone,” Dr Clements said.
