League player hopeful

Rex Dalzell, the Canterbury rugby league prop forward, will not decide until a few hours before the match whether he will take his place in the Linwood team to meet Marist-Western Suburbs at the Show Grounds this evening.

A knee injury suffered by Dalzell last Sunday cast doubts as to whether he would be able to play in the second semi-final of the Qantas-Radio Avon knockout tournament, particularly!

as he could not train with the representative squad on Monday.

However, he said last evening that the injury, inflicted when he came into contact with a Kaiapoi opponent’s shoulder in a tackle, had responded to treatment. The constant use of ice packs had given him sufficient freedom to have a light run with the Linwood squad.

Linwood and Marist will virtually be meeting in a replay of the corresponding

match last season. On that occasion Linwood won, 15-12, in extra time, only to lose in their three subsequent meetings at premiership and championship level.

The curtain-raiser and other semi-final this evening is between Hornby and Sydenham. Both were responsible for big upsets on Sunday—Hornby • over Papanui and Sydenham against Eastern Suburbs - Hertz—and will be keen to further increase their standings.
