Marathon entry low

Forty-five entries have been received for the Easter Monday Mount Hutt marathon so far, although the secretary of the Ashburton Amateur Athletic Club (Mr R. B. Gurnmer) said he was hopeful of 100. This year is the fifth running of the marathon. Prospective competitors have until April 1 to enter. “However, if we fall well short of our target, the closing date could be extended right up to the morning of the race,” said Mr Gurnmer. Confirmations so far include a good entry from Dunedin, and one Auckland runner. Several local athletes are in possession of entry forms.

Last year’s winner was the steeplechase specialist, Martin Couldwell (Christchurch) who finished what he described as a “training run” in a new record time of 2hrs 24min 31s.

Support has lessened for the marathon since the advent of petrol restrictions. Over 230 registered for the 1978 event, but that dropped to about 150 last year. I
