Rhodesian rugby nod

NZPA Salisbury The new Rhodesian Sports Minister, Mrs Taurai Nhongo, yesterday gave the go-ahead for continued rugby ties with South Africa—ana signalled her approval of the match against the touring British Lions in June.

Rhodesia’s rugby chief, Mr Des Van Jaarsveldt, said after a meeting with the Minister that she said: “Just carry on as you have before.”

Mr Van Jaarsveldt, president of the Rhodesian Rugby Union Board, said he had requested the meetng to clarify the situation regarding sporting ties with white-ruled South Africa after Rhodesia becomes independent Zimbabwe next month.

The newly elected government of Robert Mugabe has previously said it will seek membership of the Organisation of African Unity (0.A.U.) which forbids sport-

ing links with South Africa

But Mr Van Jaarsveldt said Mrs Nhongo told him that Rhodesia could remain in the interprovincial Currie Cup— South Africa’s main rugby competition. Rhodesia could also stage the match against the British Lions, who are due in Zimbabwe on June 10, midway through their tour of South Africa, he said.
