South-East Asia interested in fishing off N.Z.
The Philippines is asking New Zealand to consider granting fishing rights in its waters to fleets from the Association of South-East Asian Nations, well informed sources have said in Manila. The sources said a request was made in a letter to the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) last weekend by the Philippines Ambassador (Mr Pacifico Evangelista) after talks in Manila last month between the Prime Minister and President Ferdinand Marcos.
The Philippines has also proposed a series of commodity agreements to help bridge the balance of trade gap now heavily in New Zealand’s favour, the sources said.
They added that the Philippines was particu-
larly interested in catching mackerel, not an important commercial fish in New Zealand, in New Zea-land-controlled waters, though it had no wide-ran-ging fishing fleets at present. The sources said the suggestion of fishing concessions for all A.S.E.A.N. countries — Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia — would meet problems in New Zealand. New Zealand has claimed rights within its 200-mile zone but has agreements on controlled fishing with countries which have previously traditionally fished in these waters — Japan, South Korea, and the Soviet Union.
A.S.E.A.N. vessels have not fished there before.
