Explosives might be moved from Cass Bay

Residents of Cass Bay might be able to sleep easier if talks to discontinue the storage of explosives in the old ammunition magazines above the village succeed. The LytteKbn Town Clerk (Mr D. A. Hillier) said that talks between the borough and the Department of Lands and Survey were continuing, and it seemed that the storage of explosives a-4 Cass Bay might be discontinued.

“The department has told us that it hopes to have all

explosives out of the area by the end of the year,” he said.

Residents of Cass Bay, many of whom did not’ know that explosives were in the magazines up the hill until one exploded on January. 17, had asked the borough to seek, an end to the practice. More negotiations with the • department were planned, and -the land might be classified as a reserve under the control of the Lyttelton Borough Council.
