Man remanded to hospital
PA . 1 Auckland c c A Grey Lynn clerk who I pointed an air pistol at a security guard who disturbed c him in an attempted bur- - glary has been remanded to t Oakley Hospital. t John Phillip Ray, aged 30, c pleaded guiltyjn the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland to c charges of making an untrue jstatement to the police, wilful damage, attempted bur- f glary, theft, and presenting an air pistol to avoid detention. He was remanded to | January 25 for a psychiatric ‘ examination. a Sergeant G. O. Narbey t told the Court that on De- £ cember 29 Ray had been’: drinking with a friend in an Otahuhu hotel. The friend had- paid for one drink for ’ Ray but had refused to pay for another. The defendant had smashed an empty glass on the bar counter. The next day the defend- ‘ ant had reported to the police that his utility vehicle < had been unlawfully taken i and a police file had been i completed. That evening Ray 1 had been disturbed by a se- I
curity guard at the premises of Bond and Bond, Ltd, in! Richmond Road. When questioned by the guard Ray had produced an air pistol and had touched the guard’s chest with it, telling him to sit in his security car. The guard had pulled the pistol from the defendant’s grasp and Ray had run off. The defendant had been found bv the police with the vehicle he had previously reported stolen and had later admitted that he had made an untrue statement about it and that he had intended to use it to commit the burglary at the Bond and Bond premises. The defendant had said that at Bond and Bond he had stolen a vehicle-registra-tion plate which he had intended to place on his vehicle as a further precaution against detection. When disturbed by the security guard he had found the pistol while searching through his bag. The pistol had later been found to have been cocked but not loaded.
