Kim Warwick ousted
PA Auckland John Austin, the 22-year-old Californian, who admits that being the brother of the United States Open tennis champion, Tracey Austin, merely made his surname better known, distinguished himself yesterday by ousting the fourth seed, Kim Warwick, of Australia, in the Benson and Hedges Open tennis tournament. The elimination of Warwick on the third day at Stanley Street continued the pattern of at least one seed a day going out of the men’s singles. There were more than a few astounded fans who were pleasantly surprised by the maturity in the New Zealand Davis Cup hope. Russell Simpson, as he progressed to the quarter-finals of the Air New Zealand men’s singles. .. , The transition, surprisingly, did not come with his splendid debut in Davis Cup tennis last summer, admitted Simpson. Simpson, who had decided that his opponent did not have a good ground shot, rocketed down a first service to Rick Evert, of the United States, only to find it hammered back at him. “It shocked me,’’ he said, “but it made me realise that I had to work for a win, although he proved easier to beat than I thought.’’
Indeed, Simpson, with splendid vollevs, passed Evert almost at will and took, the match 6-4, 8-2, without once having his own service broken. John Sadri, the top seed, a late arrival at the tournament, made quick work of disposing of the Australian, Fillip Krajcik, 6-3, 6Tim WHkison, the second seed and doubles partner of Sadri was forced to a tie-breaker by Peter Langsford (Auckland) / but in mounting confidence derived from winning the tie-breaker, 7- went on to win the second set, 6-0. Peter Feigl, of Austria, the No. 3 seed, and Rod Frawley (Australia) also advanced to the quarter-finals. The New Zealand winner of the Australian Open women’s doubles, Judy Chalones breezed through the first set, 6-1, against Annette Smith (North Shore) in the U.D.C. Finance women’s singles, then won the second, 6-3.
