Upsets continue in bowls pairs titles
PA Dunedin. Jack Dale, of South Brighton, had a surprise win over the international player, Kerry Clark (North East Valley) in the fifth round of the pairs at the Rothmans New Zealand bowling championships at Dunedin yesterday. Clark, and his lead Terry Scott, looked in good form in the previous game and it was a surprise to see them beaten by the big margin of 25-14. Terry Scott summed up his feelings after the game: “They outdrew us and' I played appalling bowls,’’ he said. “The lead is where the foundation is laid ” That was the crux of the game. David Wadman, aged 37, a compatty secretary and only a fourth year bowler in his second national championships was ™ ore consistent and outdrew Scott. The South Brighton team led 12-5 after 10 ends and was 18-9 ahead after 14 of' the, 21 ends. A slight recovery by North East Valley saw the gap reduced to seven points after 18 ends but Clark did not score again and the game was over. . The Kaikorai pair of Stewart and Duncan McConnell had a comfortable win over the Twieri pair of Ernie Andrews arid Colin Hall. 22-8. to reach the quarterfinals of the Pair- . But the excitement for the McConnell brothers came, in the previous round when they narrowly won a cliff-hanger from Rov Girvirvand Don Wadsworth, of Stoke. 20-19. on the last bowl. The McConnell brothers were the only one of th* fancied six teams tn survive the day. .Th* fancied Parib'tu teams of Dave Baldwin and BUI Me Arthur• were both eliminated in the mprhing
rounds as was Joss de Jongh (Mission Bay) and Gordon Jolly (Leith). In another close fifth round match, Colin Galt and Dave Burgess, of Te Rangi, beat the strong Paritutu combination of Kevin Hickland and Jim Christie, 21-18. The McConnell brothers look to be the favourites to win the pairs title. But any of the other eight surviving ’teams could surprise. Archie Cursey and Bill Thomson (Taieri) look to be the danger men after their big, 24-14. fifth round win. But the Port Chalmers pair of Keith Ellwood and Bruce Malcolm should not be underestimated. The other qualifiers for the pairs quarter-finals which begin at 9 a.m. today are Eddie Jacobwon (Caledonian), Chas Game (Heiensville), and Dunean Colli* (South Brighton).
