Coates wins 3.7m title

Stewart Coates capsized at the start of the first heat of the South Island 3.7 m yachting championship at Pigeon Bay, but recovered to win that race and sail on to over-all victory. The series was held in strong gusting winds, generally from the south, and mishaps occurred in all five heats. Coates was a victim of the conditions in the second event, capsizing while

in the lead and being the runner-up to Tom Arthur. Gear breakages by Neil Dixon and Roger Hall enabled Coates to take line honours from Arthur in the & third heat. Coates passed a capsized Evan Roper on his way to win the next race, and when Arthur suffered a similar fate Coates also won the final event. On over-all standings, Arthur was second and Simon Nikoloff third.
