Ireland’s reunification
Sir, —Confirmation of the British Government’s firm intention not to relinquish its hold on its colonial enclave in Ireland's Ulster province, is provided by its latest initiative in convening a conference on January 7. 1980 in order, to quote the subleader (“The Press,” December 27) “to restore some measure of local government to Northern Ireland.” How typical in its duplicity is the British Government’s willingness to confer self-govern-ment on the Protestant colonists in Ulster while strenuously resisting the most reasonable proposals for selfgovernment by the two Celtic nations, colonies in effect, which under English tutelage form the United Kingdom. Unless the policy declaration of “the peaceful reunification of Ireland” by its new Prime Minister, Charles Haughey. means pursuing the most vigorous cam-
paign of arousing world opinion against Britain’s continuing aggression against Ireland in every available international forum, such declarations will remain mere demagogic mouthings of fine-sounding words.—Yours, etc., M. CREEL. December 27, 1979.
