Drugs ban for Maoris
PA Wellington I Ancient Maori rahui ceremonies will be held through-, out New Zealand ori Sunday | to impose a ban on drug j taking by Maoris. Professor S. M. Mead, of Victoria University’s anthropology and Maori department, is the initiator of the campaign. He said yesterdav that drug abuse had had a devastating effect on Maoris and Maoritanga. “Drug abuse in general among the Maori people can be regarded as one of the insidious influences of Western civilisation coming at the end of a chain of traumatic events in New Zealand,” Professor Mead said. A statement on the aims of the rahui says that it is to declare all illicit drugs; out of bounds for Maori; people.
