Pulp tests boost prospect of mill
Nelson reporter ' The establishment of a pulp mill'in the Nelson .area has, come a tittle closer with the ‘‘very favourable" reac-tion-of overseas paper companies to a sample of Nelson wood chips pulped in Oslo (Norway) and Helsinki (Finland). Four tonnes of the radiata chips .were sent to Oslo and Helsinki in July by the Baigent and CSR partnership . investigating the feasibility of building a pulp mill in the Nelson district. The shipment was intended as a mar- ■ keting sample. . The chips, costing several thousand, dollars to airfreight, were probably, the most expensive to have left New Zealand. According to Mr G. G. Wright. the., partnership’s special ■ projects executive, the pulp mills at Oslo and Helsinki produced samples of flash dried thermo mechanical pulp which was then distributed to leading Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese paper companies for evaluation. “Their reactions have been very favourable,” Mr Wright said. The companies had reported that the product had good strength properties and ! high brightness.
