Govt refusal angers body
PA Hamilton The secretary of the Hamilton Refugee Resettlement Committee (Mrs B. Redfern) is “hopping mad” because Hamilton proposals to set up a transit camp for IndoChinese refugees have been rejected by the Government. Although the Cabinet reached its decision a week ago, Mrs Redfern was first informed of the rejection by the “Waikato Times” newspaper. She said she would send a telegram to the Under-Secre-tary of Immigration (Mr. Malcolm) seeking ait urgent! meeting. "We put in a lot of work on this project and we were in a real position to help,” she said. The Hamilton pronosaf, for which accommodation 1 and all other services had i been arranged, was put to' the Government. because, sponsors throughout Waikato were waiting to help families. In announcing that it would not take up any of the community offers, the. Government said it would step up the through-flow at the Mangere reception centre.
