Very selective rises
There was a slight upturn in trading on Australian [stock exchanges yesterday, [but there were fears of further interest rate increases, [which could again send the [market down again! [ News, Ltd’s, bid for just over 50 per cent of the [shares in the Herald and I Weekly Times group made : the price of the scrip rise [from 278 c to 385 c. B.H.P. finished the day 4c lower on 922 c. Acmil was steady at 96c [with rumours circulating of la counter takeover bid for the company. The A.N.Z. Bank rose 10c to 370 c on a profit report. Beach Petroleum rose 27c to 92c on a .report that the North Paaratte No 1 well, near Port Campbell Western Victoria, was flowing gas at the rate of seven million cubic feet a day.
The major partners in the’ Th.pmby Creek oil strike moved ahead, Thiess lost 22c to 646 c! following C.S.R.’s announce-! ment that it had bought!
