Warning to boat buyers
PA Wellington People buying boats labelled, “Light-weight and unsinkable,” should beware. This only means that some are harder to sink than others.
This warning has been made by the chairman of the Small Boats Safety Committee (Captain G. Wearing). He was commenting on points raised from criticism of the Fastnet ocean race disaster. He believed that a big problem was that modern yacht designs sacrificed safety to achieve speed for racing. Many yachts competing in the race had insufficient safety equipment. In New Zealand waters, radios and electronic bleepers should be carried at all times. Captain Wearing said that yachtsmen should not underestimate the dangers of New Zealand waters, remembering there was no such thing as an unsinkable boat.
