Welfare bill delay sought by family group

The Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Gair) has been asked to postpone the committee stages of the Sociai Security Amendment Bill for at least three weeks. The request came from the Christian Family Movement solo-parents’ support group in Christchurch, which opposes two clauses in the bill. The bill includes provisions to increase benefits as announced in the Budget. Mrs M. Grenfell said on behalf of the group that the investigating powers conferred by the bill were an invasion of civil liberties. The group was also unhappy about the provisions governing the payment of die additional benefit. The delay had been requested so that the group could take a case to the Minister for amendments to these clauses. This could not be done sooner than three weeks because she and three other members of the group were going to Hawaii to attend a course on stability in soloparent homes. The trip had been underwritten by a Christchurch sponsor, but the group hoped to reclaim the expenses through the Social Welfare Distribution Committee.
