Clubs to air views on licensing laws

Officials of sports clubs who are disillusioned by the laws on ancillary liquor liewices will have an opportunity to air their views at a meeting in the High School Old Boys Rugby Club’s rooms on Tuesday.

The Christchurch branch of the Sporting Clubs Association has invited representatives of all sports to meet Mr J. H. Elworthy, chairman of the Parliamentary select committee that is investigating the ancillary-li-cence regulations introduced in 1976. The committee was to have reported to Parliament on July 19, but the meeting’s organiser (Mr T. P. George) said it seemed the matter would not be taken to the next stage until September or October.

“We are very disappointed that clubs in Christchurch were not visited when the select committee was considering its submissions,” Mr George said yesterday. “This . meting will give clubs their last opportunity to discuss any problems before legislation is passed.” Mr George said that Mr Elworthy was prepared to listen to the views of the clubs and then answer questions. “Under the present laws, winter sports clubs will have to close their doors at the end of next month because of the restrictions in their licences,” Mr George said.
