Removal of berms
Sir,—Your report about removal of grass berms (“The Press,” July 5) interested me. The report said that elderly residents in Wilsons Road, because of difficulty of maintenance by them, would get their grass berms removed and replaced with grit ones, at the council’s expense. According to the head of the council health department all berms are officially part of the footpath and therefore* officially the council’s responsibility. Could sqmeone tell me what council by-law makes property owners responsible for the maintenance of the -.m part of the footpath outside the fence lines. —Yours, etc., C. J. FLOWERS. July 6, 1979. [Mr J. H. Gray. General Manager and Town Clerk, replies: “Grass berms between the kerbline and the property boundary line are part of the legal street. Where these berms are not regularly maintained by residents, the council endeavours to cut the grass two or three times a year. The council appreciates the action of the majority of residents who undertake this maintenance work, thereby assisting and keeping the city neat and tidy — and significantly reducing costs (and consequently, rates).”]
