New Zealanders “selfish”
Sir, — To prove that we are not selfish as a nation, Arthur May (May 4) quotes Telethon. Did we not give that money to avoid giving ourselves to tens of lesspublicised needs? He also says that we accept as many or more refugees than any other country. A recent television documentary reported that, per head of population, Australia is taking several times as many Indo-Chinese refugees as New Zealand in 1979. Could “The Press” print the official figures please? — Yours, etc., RHONA THORPE. May 4, 1979. [The population of Australia is 14.3 million. It takes, by agreement, 500 Vietnamese refugees from Malaysia each month. Australia estimates that 2000 IndoChinese refugees have arrived by boats since 1976. The population of New Zealand is 3.1 million. It plans to take 600 Indo-Chinese refugees during 1979. Others will come through family reunification arrangements. —Editor]
