Win for Millen
PA Auckland Steve Millen had a comfortable win in the final round of the national Gold Star motor racing championship at Pukekohe yesterday. He was only briefly headed in the Union Travel championships event, finishing well in front of David Oxton. What looked to be a promising race evaporated when Ken Smith slid oS the track on the curve at the end of the main straight at the start of lap three. Smith had briefly overtaken Millen’s Martini Hertz Chevron on the previous lap at the end
of the back straight, but then the front of his March lost downforce as he followed only feet behind Millen round the front straight curve and Millen had an easy run to the chequered flag. David Oxton took five laps to get his Unipart Chevron past the March of Graeme Lawrence, and although he lapped at the sama speed as Millen he could not bridge the gap between them. Lawrence finished a lonely third, while Grant Campbell came through to fourth place in only his third Formula Pacifio outing, disposing of Hugh Owen, Johnny Riley and Eric Morgan in the process.
