Productivity and incomes

Sir, — Greater productivity for the same income or less seems to be the plight of the New Zealand dairyindustry. Greater income for the same service or less seems to be the blight of New Zealand unions. The common denominator to the problems of both groups is New Zealand’s poor management internally and its increasingly weak standing financially. The adage “things could be worse” hopefully does not apply; who would want it to? The situation will remain the same until the reform proposed by Social Credit is implemented, a reform that will give farmers incentives to produce, ability to replace machinery, own their own farms. At the same time the union demands for more money would be eased by a halt in the cost of living increases, a return to real purchasing power in the pay packet and the implementation of a responsive industrial relations policy. —Yours, etc., D. G. GATES. March 30, 1979.
