“Planning to get married”
Sir, — “The Press,” March 29, carried three pages of advertisements on “Planning to get married.” We know that young people get a barrage of these advertisements in their letter-boxes when they have announced their engagement but to see the lot together, somehow looks more vulgar. I feel this is nothing short of exploiting young couples at a crucial time in their lives. The three pages of advertisements reveal more about our society than about our care in planning for young marriages. According to current statistics the chances of these marriages surviving are slight. I searched somewhat hopefully for any advertisement that might show interest in the young couple themselves and their growing relationship — for example, an engaged couples course, which does run continuously in our city. Where, also, is the advertisement that will show the young couple, when the glamour day is over, where to get support and friendship amid the isolation so often experienced in the new suburb? — Yours, etc., FATHER KEVIN BURNS. March 29, 1979.
